They Found the New World - Part Two

What part of the New World did the Vikings visit?

Leif Ericson Sailed from Norway as soon as his ship was ready for the voyage. "For a long time he was tossed about upon the ocean", says The Saga of Eric the Red.

How those stormy Atlantic winds must have filled the single sail! How the roaring waves must have washed over the deck, half drowning the men in that open ship!

At last the storm died down and Leif could lift his head and look about him. To the west he saw a coast line running north and south as far as he could see. The land was low and covered with trees; it could not be either Iceland or Greenland. It was vast; it was, in the words of the saga, unlike any land ever seen before. It was a new world - the New World.

No one knows just what part of North America Leif the Lucky found. "There were xild wheat fields and vines growing there. There were also those trees which are called mausur, and of all these they took specimens." So says the saga in Hauk's Book, and that is all it says about this great moment.

The world of the saga lead us nowhere in our search for the place that Leif found. Since there is no wild wheat in America, Leif probably saw tall grass which looks line wheat. We cannot tell what vines he meant. And trees big enough to be used for building houses and ships grow all the way from Florida to Labrador. The word "mausur" means only a kind of twisted wood.


A Land to Settle?

But in treeless Greeenland, the people must have looked with great interest at the specimens that Leif brought home with him. They must have spoken longingly of reaching this new country, which they called "Wineland the Good".

In the fall of 1003 a man called Karlsefni came to Greenland from Iceland. His name meant "the one who will probably become a hero". He was a merchant-sailor, a man of great riches and great courage.

He must have heard much of "Wineland the Good". Certainly he saw much of Gudrid, a Christian woman of great beauty and sweet voice. Karlsefni married her at Christmas time.

In the spring of 1004 he set out for Wineland with his wife and a crew of brave sailors. Two ships, filled with cattle and equipment, carried all the thigs necessary to establish a colony. There were 160 men and women - the first European people to sail for America with the hope of living there.

They sailed south until they came to a country with great forests and deep inlets. This they called "Markland", a name meaning "Forest-land". They entered a wide bay, with a powerful current coming from it. This they called "Stream Fiord". Here was an island so covered with birds that the Northmen could not walk without stepping their eggs.


Where Were They?

From the saga's words, scholars have tried to find out just where the Norse adventurers went. They probably sailed first to either Baffin Island or northern Labrador. Forested "Markland" is probably southern Labrador. "Stream Fiord" must be somewhere in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. And the island covered with birds is probably Bonaventure, off the Quebec coast. Today, Bonaventure is still crowded with sea birds and their nests.

At "Stream Fiords", the Northmen spent the winter. In a cabim was born the son of Gudrid and Karlsefni, the first European child born upon the American continent. Hauk was a descendant of that child.


Trip to the South

After a hard winter, Karlsefni and his party set sail for the south. When they had sailed "a long time" southward, they came to a bay, or hop, as they called it.

There they found an abundance of "wild wheat" and "vines". Along the shore they dug holes into which fish fell when the seas were high. In the woods were great numbers of wild animals which they killed for food. Here, for half a month, says the saga, "they enjoyed themselves", feasting on fish and wild animals.


A Strange Visit

One day, we are told, the Norsemen were at "Hops" and saw coming toward them a number of long, narrow boats. The boats were full of strange-looking nem whom they called Skrellings, dark-skinned nem with black hair, great eyes and wide faces. The Skrellings appeared equally surprised by the blue-eyed, fair-haired Norsemen. The Skrellings looked a long time in wonder and then went away in their boats.

The Skrellings did not come back until spring. They brought furs which they wanted to trade for the spears and swords of the Norse. But Karlsefni said "No". Then the Skrellings pointed to some red cloth that the Norsemen had.

"In return for a perfect fur, the Skrellings would take a short piece of red cloth, which they would put around their heads", says the saga. But some of the cattle belonging to the Norsemen suddenly began to roar, and the frightened Skrellings ran away to their boats.

When they returned three weeks later, they came with war whoops and arrows. a bloody battle followed - war-whooping. Skrellings against berserk Vikings.

The Norsemen did not want to fight another such battle, so they decided to sail north again. They spent the third winter at "Stream Fiord".


Back to Iceland

When spring came, they filled their dragon ships with "mausur" wood and set sail for Greenland and then for Iceland, which was Karlsefni home. There he led his wife Gudrid and his little son Snorre into the hall of his fathers.

Here the saga ends. But for some 300 years the men of Greenland sailed to Markland to fill their ships with wood. for hundreds of years, too, the 16 churches in Greenland sent presents to the mother church in Rome. Then this stopped, and the colony in Greenland was never heard of again. No one knows what happened to it. Perhaps some terrible sickness swept over the people; perhaps they starved to death.

A monk in Europe recorded that "it is 80 years now since any ship came from Greenland." And he put the date in his record. The date is 1492.

Cuidado com o zero...

Prezados,

Aqui está o número mais interessante e mais traiçoeiro da matemática!

Se você não tiver cuidado com o zero, ele poderá vir estampado como nota em uma prova de matemática...

Então, olhos bem abertos com esse número! Aprenda a lidar com ele e pare de cair nas "pegadinhas" dos examinadores.


Um pouco de história

Até a criação do zero a humanidade encontrava uma forma bastante particular de representar e contar quantidades.

Os algarismos romanos não foram desenvolvidos para se realizar cálculos, mas para registrar quantidades. Não havia representação entre os algarismos romanos para o zero. Imagine-se realizando uma operação como esta



Contribuição hindu

Utilizando o ábaco, em vez de operarem com pedrinhas, os hindus utilizaram os nove primeiros algarismos escritos.

Os algarismos eram traçados nas colunas de areia, sendo que se apagava as quantidades quando essas completavam a dezena, isto é, transportava-se uma unidade para a ordem superior - o nosso famoso "vai um"!

A criação do símbolo para o zero se deu por volta do século 5 d.C. Ela ocorreu quando os hindus passaram a representar as quantidades utilizando-se os próprios algarismos (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) e o princípio posicional sem a utilização do ábaco.

Os numerais que até então não existiam fora do ábaco, ganharam independência e passaram de elemento mecânico para elemento racional.

É desta forma que esta escrita numérica consegue, com apenas dez símbolos escrever todos os infinitos números que o cérebro humano pode imaginar.


Os Algarismos "Arábicos"

Os algarismos indo-arábicos ou simplesmente arábicos, foram criados e desenvolvidos pela Civilização do Vale do Indo (região onde atualmente se localiza o Paquistão) e trazidos para o Mundo ocidental. O sistema de numeração arábico é considerado um dos avanços mais significativos da Matemática.

A maioria dos historiadores coincide em afirmar que teve a sua origem na Índia (de fato, no árabe, este sistema de numeração é chamado de "Números Indianos", أرقام هندية, arqam hindiyyah), e expandiu-se pelo mundo islâmico e daí, via al-Andalus, pelo resto da Europa.

Os árabes, que do século VI ao XIV funcionaram como os grandes transmissores do conhecimento do oriente para o ocidente, trouxeram com eles o conceito do zero, além de nove outros números que também haviam sido desenvolvidos na Índia. Os números, como os conhecemos, são baseados nos ângulos formados entre os traços, como na figura ao lado. 

O único número representado sob a forma arredondada ou elipsóide é o zero, para simbolizar a total ausência de ângulos.

O responsável pela transformação dos números indianos em arábicos foi o matemático e alquimista Al-Khwrizmi, cujas obras serviram de base para os trabalhos do ocultista, astrólogo, alquimista e matemático chamado Al-Gorisma (de onde vem a palavra algoritmo), que trouxe estes numerais para os acampamentos árabes na Espanha. Seus trabalhos foram traduzidos para o latim por volta do século XII. Gradualmente, este sistema “árabe” foi introduzido na Europa e começou a alavancar progressos na ciência e no pensamento filosófico.


Esse número não vale nada...

Apresentamos brevemente a origem do número zero. Passaremos agora algumas de suas particularidades. O que vale fundamentalmente aqui é o alerta para que o leitor jamais se descuide desse número, pois os examinadores (eu, inclusive) costumam explorá-lo bastante em provas de concursos públicos e derrubam milhares de candidatos desatentos ou pouco preparados...


O zero não tem sinal 

O zero é um número não-positivo e não-negativo. Se você diz que um número é "positivo", ele não pode ser zero. Se você diz que um número é "negativo", ele não pode ser zero.


O zero não divide número algum

Muito cuidado em questões desse tipo:

(leitura: "x dividido por x é igual a 1, qualquer que seja x no conjunto dos números reais.)

(leitura: "Zero dividido por x é igual a zero, qualquer que seja x no conjunto dos números reais.)

As duas sentença são falsas! Os mitos que se perpetuam por aí nos dizem que:

1. Dividir um número por ele mesmo sempre dará 1 como resultado.
Errado: 0/0 é indeterminado!

2. Dividir zero por qualquer número sempre dará 0 como resultado.
Errado: 0/0 é indeterminado!

(leitura: "x elevado a 0 é igual a 1, qualquer que seja no conjunto dos números reais.)

(leitura: "Zero elevado a é igual a zero, qualquer que seja no conjunto dos números reais.)

As duas sentença acima são falsas! Veja outros mitos:

3. Elevar um número a 0 sempre dará 1 como resultado.
Errado: 0 elevado a 0 é indeterminado!

4. Elevar zero a qualquer número sempre dará 0 como resultado.
Errado: 0 elevado a 0 é indeterminado!


O zero é múltiplo de qualquer número

Multiplicando-se qualquer número real por zero, o resultado é zero. Isto vale também para o zero!


O zero é par

Um outro erro muito comum é dizer que o zero não é par nem ímpar... 

Número par é todo número inteiro que, ao ser dividido por 2, fornece zero como resto da divisão.

Em outras palavras: números pares são aqueles que podem ser representados sob a forma 2n, sendo n um número inteiro.

Assim, podemos concluir que o zero é par!

Da próxima vez que você se deparar com o zero, pense duas vezes antes de dizer que ele não vale nada...

1    Introdução

A Teoria dos conjuntos é o ramo da matemática que estuda conjuntos.
Conjuntos são coleções de elementos. Embora qualquer tipo de elemento possa ser reunido em um conjunto, a teoria dos conjuntos é aplicada na maioria das vezes a elementos que são relevantes para a matemática. A linguagem da teoria dos conjuntos pode ser usada nas definições de quase todos os elementos matemáticos.
O estudo moderno da teoria dos conjuntos foi iniciado por Georg Cantor e Richard Dedekind em 1870. Esta teoria ficou conhecida como "teoria ingênua" ou teoria intuitiva por causa da descoberta de várias antinomias (ou paradoxos) associados à ideia central da própria teoria, que levaram à proposição de numerosos sistemas de axiomas no início do século XX.

2    Formas de Representação de um Conjunto

Um conjunto é nomeado por uma letra maiúscula e deve ser representado por uma das três formas mostradas a seguir.

2.1  Por enumeração dos elementos


Exemplo: A = {0, 1, 2, 3}

2.2  Por compreensão


Exemplo: A = {x N / x3}

2.3  Por diagrama de Euler-Venn


Exemplo:


3    Subconjuntos

Exemplo:
Dado o conjunto: C = {a, b, c}, tem-se os seguintes subconjuntos:

{ }; {a}; {b}; {c}; {a, b}; {a, c}; {b, c}; {a, b, c}

Observações:
(1) O conjunto vazio, representado como { } ou  é subconjunto de qualquer conjunto.

(2) O próprio conjunto é subconjunto de si mesmo.

3.1  Número de subconjuntos

O número de subconjuntos de um conjunto qualquer sempre será dado pela expressão


onde:
k é o número de subconjuntos, e
n é o número de elementos do conjunto.

Exemplo 1:

Quantos subconjuntos tem o conjunto: C = {a, b, c}?

Solução:

O conjunto C tem 3 elementos, isto é, n = 3

Resposta: O conjunto C tem 8 subconjuntos.

Exemplo 2:

Com as frutas abacaxi, banana, maçã, laranja e pera, deseja-se preparar saladas de frutas. Quantas saladas distintas se podem fazer, desde que cada uma delas tenha pelo menos duas frutas distintas?

They Found the New World - Part One

Five hundred years before Columbus, fearless men roamed the coasts of North America.

In a museum near Oslo, Norway, there are three ships that the Vikings once sailed. For a thousand years the ships lay buried, serving as the tombs of kings. Today they still look eager for adventure, with keel and prow rising in a single curving line.

In ships like these, each with one great sail and 16 oars to a side, the Norsemen crossed the Atlantic Ocean. They made their trip 500 years before Columbus's first voyage to America.

Although they are only a little larger than today's fishing boats, the Viking ships are masterpieces. The keel, body and sides of the ships are of oak. The boards are thinned down perfectly. The calking is of twisted animal hair. Each boat has floorboards of pine. The single mast is made of spruce. The oars are set into oarlocks that could be closed in stormy weather.

The sail of a Viking ship was usually red and yellow. The prow was a dragon's head, and the stern was a dragon's tail. The shields of the fighting sailors were black or yellow, and lay over each other along the sides of the ship like a dragon's scales.

The Vikings had no maps or compasses. They found their direction by the North Star and figured how far north or south they were by other stars. By watching birds in flight, they could tell where land lay and how far away it was.

With a single sail, the Vikings could move a ship about freely only if the wind blew from behind them. Yet they worked their way through fields of icebergs. They were the greatest sailors who ever risked their lives and ships on the wide Atlantic.

The Vikings were the boldest pirates, too. They swept down on every coast of Europe. They overpowred the people of the Hebrides, Orkneys, Shetlands and Foroes, and then settled on these islands. They established themselves on the coast of France, where their descendants, the Normans, live today. They swept into England and taught the British to be sailors. The Vikings descendants there are the tall men and fair-haired girls of England.

The bold men of the north gave the English language much of its sailor talk: mast, keel, sail, iceberg and many more words. They raided Saxony for strong men and Ireland for beautiful girls. In the year 874, these Viking pirates went to Iceland and in 930 established a government whose parliament has lasted from that day to this. It is the oldest parliament in the world.

The Viking who settled in Iceland believed in the ancient Norse gods, Thor and Odin, and they also believed in freedom and law. a wife had equality with her husband and could own land, cattle and slaves.

Hospitality and courtesy were duties. Music and poetry were heard in the great halls. The world's literature was made richer by the Norse sagas-tales of heroes which were told to guests at feasts.

The Vilings had little of what we would call comfort, but they did have an abundance of gold and silver jewelry, beautifully woven cloth and wonderfully carved furniture. For the very rich, there were also silks and fine wines from far countries.

But riches were not the measure of a man. The perfect Viking hero was one who could jump as high as his head while wearing all his heavy fighting equipment. He could use his spear or sword with either his left hand or his right. He was a fighter who went into battle berserk. To the Norsemen berserk meant "filled with fighting fury".

Such a man was Eric the Red. He got his name from the color of his beard, which was as red as fire. He was like fire in other ways, too. He fought so wildly with other Norse families that the courts of law made him leave Iceland.

A Big Island

In 982 he sailed west into the unknown ocean, for he had heard that land had been sighted there by voyagers blown off their course. At last he, too, found a great island, which he named Greenland. He believed that such a name would bring settlers after him, and indeed it did.

On Greenland, Eric settled with his wife, his children, his slaves and his friends. He built barns and a house that was 100 feet long. Here his son Leif Ericson, known as Leif the Lucky, grew up.

This story comes down to us as The Saga of Eric the Red. It is written on ancient pages of leather in the Icelandic language.

The book was put together in 1320 by a man named Hauk. He simply wrote down the exciting story that had been told for hundreds of years. From the story we learn that Leif, a man of courage and courtesy, sailed to Norway, where he was well received by King Olaf in the year 1000.

The Christian religion was then sweeping into Scandinavia. The King's talk of the new religion inspired Leif and his sailors to become Christians. And the King commanded Leif to carry Christianity to Greenland.

Why the doctor was late

It was a cold winter night, but the doctor wanted to help.

One hight, a little before nine o'clock, the doctor answered his telephone. "Glens Falls calling Dr. Van Eyck", said the voice on the telephone.

"This is Dr. Van Eyck speaking", said the doctor.

A moment later Dr. Van Eyck heard another voice: "This is Dr. Haydon at the hospital in Glens Falls. We have a very sick boy here in our hospital. He has just been brought in with a bullet in his brain. He is very weak and may not live. We should operate at once, but I'm not a surgeon, you know."

"I'm 60 miles from Glens Falls", said Dr. Van Eyck.

"Have you called Dr. Mercer? He lives in Glens Falls."

"He is out of town", said Dr. Haydon. "I am calling you because the boy comes from your city. He was visiting here and shot himself while playing with a gun."

"You say that the boy is from Albany?" asked Dr. Van Eyck. "What is his name?"

"Arthur Cunningham."

"I don't think that I know him. But I'll get there as soon as I can. It's snowing here, but I think that I can get there before 12 o'clock."

"I should tell you that the boy's family is very poor. I don't think that they can pay you anything."

"That's all right", said Dr. Van Eyck.

A few minutes later, the surgeon's car had to stop for a red light at the edge of town. A man in an old black coat opened the door of the car and got in.

"Drive on", he said. "I've got a gun."

"I'm a doctor", said Van Eyck. "I'm on my way to the hospital to operate on a very sick..."

"Don't talk", said the man in the old black coat. "Just drive."

A mile out of town he ordered the doctor to stop the car and get out. Then the man drove on down the road. The doctor stood there for a moment in the falling snow.

A half hour later Dr. Van Eyck found a telephone and called a taxi. At the railway station he learned that the next train to Glens Falls would not leave until 12 o'clock.

It was after two o'clock in the morning when the surgeon arrived at the hospital in Glens Falls. Dr. Haydon was waiting for him.

"I did my best", said Van Eyck, "but I was stopped on the road and my car..."

"It was good of you to try", said Dr. Haydon. "The boy died an hour ago."

The two doctors walked by the door of the hospital waiting room. There sat the man in the old black coat, with his head in his hands.

"Mr. Cunningham", said Dr. Haydon to the man, "this is Dr. Van Eyck. He is a surgeon who came all the way from Albany to try to save your boy."

O que pensamos de um programa assim enunciado? Só serve para deixar o candidato ainda mais confuso, visto que um programa, na verdadeira acepção da palavra, deve enunciar/enumerar claramente os tópicos que serão cobrados na prova; algo do tipo: (1) Verdades e mentiras; (2) Sequências; (3) Relacionamento de pessoas ou objetos; (4) Pesagens; etc. Desse modo, e apenas desse modo, o candidato estará seguro de que poderá se preparar adequadamente.

É mais ou menos desta forma que este livro está organizado, e, embora seja fato sabido que não irá abordar todos os tipos de questões a serem cobradas – dada a variedade do tema – pelo menos, esperamos, orientará o candidato de modo mais coerente, para que possa desenvolver seu próprio estilo e habilidade para resolver um grande número de questões.

Uma recomendação importante:
Abstenha-se de ficar buscando as respostas ou a solução completa para as questões, ao primeiro sinal de dificuldade! Lembre-se de que, se uma questão de raciocínio lógico já está respondida (ou já raciocinada por outra pessoa), seu cérebro irá parar de trabalhar na solução e tomará uma carona no raciocínio alheio por meio de mera leitura... Isso não passa de uma ilusão de aprendizado!

Pictures Through the Air - Part Two

Who was really the first to invent television?

A New York inventor named Vladimir Zworykin was also working on television. Many years earlier, he had been a student of the man whose work Philo had studied in the school library. Now Zworykin was working for a big radio company in New York. The president of the company was intersted in Zworykin's ideas for television and gave him money to try them out.

Zworykin in New York and Farnsworth almost 3000 miles away in California knew nothing of each other's work or ideas.

But the United States Patent Office knew about both men. The Patent Office knew that both were working on the same intention and that some of their most importan ideas were the same.

At last Zworykin and Farnsworth learned about each other's work. At once they asked the Patent Office in Washington to say who should have the patent rights to television. The man who held the patent would have the right to own or sell his idea of television. If he should succeeded in sending pictures through the air, he could become the head of a great new business and a rich man.

Very soon the Patent Office asked the two men to come to Washington for a hearing. The important question at the hearing would be quite simple: Which man could prove that he had been the first to invent television?

Before going to Washington, Farnsworth and his lawyer got ready for the hearing. At first, it seemed that Farnsworth would not be able to prove that he had worked on television befere he went to San Francisco. But he knew that he had started his work years earlier.

"I suppose the first drawing that I ever made of television was  in 1922", Farnsworth told his lawyer.

"Can you bring that drawing to the hearing?" his lawyer asked.

"It was made on a blackboard one day after school."

"Did anyone else see it?"

"Yes, my teacher, Justin Tolman", answered Farnsworth.

"Where is he now?"

"I don't know."

"But he is the only person who can help you, Mr. Farnsworth", said the lawyer.

And so the search for Tolman began. At last he was found, teaching science in a school in Salt Lake City.

At the hearing in Washington, Farnsworth's lawyer first showed that Philo had not seen or heard from his teacher for many years, not since Philo's school days in the little town of Rigby.

Then the lawyer said, "Mr. Tolman, I want you to remember the time when Philo Farnsworth was a student of yours. Did he ever tell you of an invention that he called television?

"He did."

"Can you remember what Philo Farnsworth told you about that invention?"

"Yes", Tolman said in a low voice. He stood up and went to a blackboard. On it he put the same drawings that Philo had made years before on the blackboard in the schoolroom at Rigby.

Then Zworykin's lawyer asked Tolman many questions about the drawings. Philo's science teacher could give every fact and figure of the television system which the 16-year-old boy had explained to him. Because Tolman remembered everything that Philo had told him, the patent rights to television were given to Philo Farnsworth.

Since then, television has become a big and an important business in the United States and all over the world. The later work of Zworykin and Farnsworth has been of equal importance. The present system of television uses the best ideas of both men.

Farnsworth's success came to him partly through his own great genious. But partly it came through the help of two good friends. One was George Everson, the businessman, who took a young boy to see a number of other businessmen in San Francisco and made them believe in him. The other was Justin Tolman, the science teacher, who knew a genius when he saw one and remembered every word that the genius had said to him.

Pictures Through the Air - Part One

A story about a young boy who had a wonderful idea.

One of the most interesting stories about television begins in the year 1922 in the little town of Rigby, Idaho. Rigby was the home of Philo Farnsworth.

Philo was 16 years old. He was very shy and didn't talk much to anyone. But one of his teachers, Justin Tolman, knew that there was something different about him.

"I had known hundreds of boys before I knew Philo", Tolman said many years later. "But Philo was different from all the others. I felt that I would never know another boy like him."

The shy boy who didn't talk much to anyone did talk with Tolman, his science teacher. "I want to learn all about science." Philo said.

He began to study science with the first-year class. After a few days, he appeared in the fourth-year class also. "I just want to sit and listen", he said.

Philo studied very hard. Soon he knew everything that the fourth-year class was learning. Then he read all the science books in the school library. He seemed to understand everything that he read.

One day after school, Tolman found Philo in the schoolroom working at the blackboard. Philo had covered the blackboard with drawings.

"What are you doing?" asked Tolman with interest. "What are these drawings about?"

"I want to invent things", Philo answered, "and these are the drawings of my first invention."

"And what is your invention?" Tolman asked, smiling a little.

"I have an idea for television − for a way of sending pictures through the air", the boy answered. "Please let me tell you about it. You are the only person who can understand what I have done."

In 1922, radio was very new. The United States had fewer than 30 radio stations. But in 1922 a boy of 16 showed his teacher drawings for television!

In the school library Philo had read the story of a man who had worked on an idea for television. But the man had not succeeded in sending pictures through the air. Philo was sure that his own idea was better and that he would succeed where the other man had failed.

Tolman was not so sure. He asked Philo many questions about the drawings. Philo could answer all his teacher's questions. He could give all the facts and figures.

At the end of that school year, the Farnsworth family left the little town of Rigby. Philo did not see his science teacher again for many years − not until the most important moment of the young inventor's life.


The big chance

In 1926, Philo worked as an office boy in Salt Lake City. Many important businessmen came into the office where he worked. One of these was George Everson, a businessman from San Francisco. Like Tolman, Everson soon became interested in Philo. The shy, hard-working boy was not like other office boys whom Everson had known.

One evening Everson asked Philo to have dinner with him. At dinner Philo began to talk about his idea for television. Everson was not much interested in the invention at first. He listened only because he wanted to be kind to the boy.

Many years later Everson wrote a book about interesting people he had known. In the book, he told about that evening with Philo.

As Farnsworth talked, he seemed to change, Everson wrote. His eyes lighted up, and he was not shy at all. He talked freely about his invention and about what he wanted to do with it. As he talked, he became a different person. He was no longer an office boy − he was a man of science.

At the end of the evening, Everson was more interested than ever in Philo. He was also interested in Philo's idea for television.

A few days later, he took Philo to San Francisco. There Everson brought together a number of importan businessmen, and Philo told them about his invention. The men became so interested in the young inventor − and in his invention − that they gave $25,000 to help him work on his idea.

Philo was only 20 years old. But now he could stop working as an office boy. He could work on his idea for television. He would have the chance to try it out. And perhaps he would succeed in sending pictures through the air.


Letter to Washington


But first he must write a letter and send drawings of his invention to the United States Government in Washington, D. C. He must ask for a patent on the invention.

The person who first has the idea for a new intention and makes drawings of it is given a patent. Then no other person can own the same idea or sell it.

Only the United States Patent Office can say who is first with a new invention. and only the Patent Office can give an inventor the U. S. patent rights on an invention.

So Philo sent his drawings to Washington and wrote a letter asking for the patent rights on television.

Pílulas de Raciocínio Lógico (4)

Raciocínio Dedutivo versus Raciocínio Indutivo

Prezados,

Recebo, frequentemente, perguntas do tipo:

"O que é Raciocínio Dedutivo?"

"O que é Raciocínio Indutivo?"

"O que é Inferência?"

Tentarei explicar usando uma linguagem simples e metáforas. Caso as dúvidas persistam, peço que deixem comentários e sugestões no final deste post. Desde já agradeço pelas valiosas contribuições que tenho recebido!

1. Raciocínio Dedutivo

O raciocínio dedutivo (ou argumento dedutivo) é aquele no qual as premissas fornecem um fundamento definitivo da conclusão. Em outras palavras, numa dedução é impossível que as premissas sejam verdadeiras e a conclusão falsa. Num raciocínio dedutivo a informação da conclusão já está contida nas premissas, de modo que se toda a informação das premissas é verdadeira, a informação da conclusão também deverá ser verdadeira.

Exemplo: 

Uma pessoa deseja preparar um bolo, e, para isto, separa os ingredientes e os coloca sobre uma mesa. Os ingredientes do bolo fazem o papel das premissas e a conclusão é o bolo já pronto. Note que não poderá faltar ingrediente (premissa) relevante para cumprir a tarefa de fazer o bolo (conclusão). Em outras palavras: ao olharmos para a mesa com os ingredientes, já teremos nela o bolo, bastando ao cozinheiro seguir a receita para concluí-lo. Nenhum ingrediente que não esteja sobre a mesa poderá fazer parte do bolo, ou seja, aquilo que não estiver nas premissas do argumento jamais poderá fazer parte da sua conclusão, em se tratando de argumento dedutivo.

Suponhamos que suco de laranja seja um dos ingredientes do bolo. Podemos, neste caso concluir (deduzir) que o bolo é de laranja. Ninguém que use os ingredientes que estão sobre a mesa dirá que o bolo pode ser de chocolate, pois chocolate não é um dos ingredientes disponíveis.

Resumidamente: nos argumentos dedutivos o raciocínio parte de premissas gerais para uma conclusão particular, conforme ilustra a figura a seguir.



2. Raciocínio Indutivo

No raciocínio indutivo (argumento indutivo), as premissas proporcionam somente alguma fundamentação da conclusão, que contém alguma informação que não está contida nas premissas, ficando em aberto a possibilidade de que essa informação a mais cause a falsidade da conclusão apesar das premissas verdadeiras.

Exemplo:

Um aluno chega à sua escola e, ao passar pela sala 1 percebe que ela foi pintada de azul. Observa que a sala 2 também foi pintada de azul. Ao passar pelas salas 3 e 4 percebe que ambas foram pintadas de azul, o mesmo ocorrendo com sua sala, que é a 5. Dessa forma, esse aluno conclui que todas as salas de aula da escola foram pintadas de azul. Entretanto, esse aluno não pode ter certeza de que isto está correto, visto que é uma generalização (inferência) baseada em alguns casos particulares (experiência).

Resumidamente: Raciocinar indutivamente é partir de premissas particulares, na busca de uma conclusão geral.

Podemos ilustrar o argumento indutivo como o funil invertido da figura a seguir.

3. Inferência

Alguns autores tratam a inferência como o ato ou processo de derivar conclusões lógicas de premissas conhecida ou decididamente verdadeiras. O processo pelo qual uma conclusão é inferida a partir de múltiplas observações é chamado processo dedutivo ou indutivo, dependendo do contexto. A conclusão pode ser correta , incorreta, correta dentro de um certo grau de precisão, ou correta em certas situações. Conclusões inferidas a partir de observações múltiplas podem ser testadas por observações adicionais.

Particularmente, vejo diferença entre o raciocínio dedutivo e a inferência. Vejamos um exemplo:

A figura abaixo representa um ônibus. O que se sabe é que ele está em movimento.


Pergunta-se: o ônibus está indo para a direita ou para a esquerda?

Comentários:

Note que aqui estamos com uma situação completamente diferente do exemplo do bolo... Lá, nossa tarefa se resumiu à identificação (leitura) dos ingredientes e o uso correto da receita para concluir a tarefa, visto que todos os ingredientes (premissas) estavam presentes.

Não é o caso da figura acima, em que o leitor necessita de "ingredientes" que não estão presentes no enunciado da situação-problema... Aqui precisaremos dar vários chutes ou praticar alguns achismos, se quisermos chegar a alguma conclusão. Dito de outra forma: precisaremos fazer inferências, como:

1. O ônibus está no Brasil, portanto sua porta (que está do lado oposto ao mostrado na figura) está na altura da roda esquerda da figura;

2. Como o enunciado diz apenas que o ônibus está em movimento, ainda precisamos de mais chutes para concluir... Se o ônibus estiver indo para a frente, a conclusão seria "para a esquerda". Se o ônibus estiver em marcha a ré, concluímos que está indo "para a direita";

3. Se o ônibus estivesse, por exemplo, na Inglaterra, todo o raciocínio feito anteriormente seria invertido...

Percebe-se que, neste caso, qualquer conclusão será válida, pois dependerá das inferências feitas pelo leitor. Como estas se baseiam unicamente na sua experiência e conhecimento, jamais poderíamos invalidar sua conclusão, qualquer que seja ela. Até mesmo quem responde que "não se pode tirar conclusão" estará correto.

O pacote de biscoitos

Uma divisão não-exata

Na sala de embarque de um aeroporto, uma moça aguardava seu voo, que atrasara. Para que não se sentisse entediada, ela resolveu comprar um livro para matar o tempo. Comprou, também, um pacote de biscoitos.

Sentou-se numa poltrona no saguão para ler seu livro com tranquilidade.

Ao seu lado sentou-se um homem.

Assim que ela pegou o primeiro biscoito do pacote, o homem, sem qualquer cerimônia, também pegou um. Ela se sentiu indignada, mas não disse nada. Apenas pensou: “Mas que sujeito mais cara de pau! Se eu estivesse mais disposta, lhe diria o que penso de gente folgada..."

A cada biscoito que ela pegava, o homem também pegava um.

Aquilo a estava deixando realmente furiosa, mas ela estava cansada demais para reagir àquela atitude deselegante.

Quando restava apenas um biscoito, ela pensou: “o que será que este abusado vai fazer agora?”

Então o homem dividiu o último biscoito ao meio, deixando a outra metade para ela.

Ah! Aquilo era demais. Ela estava bufando de raiva.

Resolveu, então, pegar o seu livro e as suas coisas e se dirigir ao portão de embarque.

Quando ela se sentou, confortavelmente, numa poltrona já no interior do avião, olhou dentro da bolsa e, para sua surpresa, o pacote de biscoitos estava lá, ainda intacto e fechado.

Ela se sentiu muito envergonhada.

Só então percebeu que a errada era ela. Afinal, estava distraída a maior parte do tempo...

Ela se esquecera de haver guardado seu pacote de biscoitos dentro da bolsa.

O homem havia dividido os biscoitos dele sem se sentir indignado, nervoso ou revoltado por isso, enquanto ela ficou transtornada, pensando estar dividindo os dela com ele.

E já não havia mais tempo para se explicar, nem para pedir desculpas...
